How to use the credit card payoff calculator

  1. Enter your current balance and the card’s annual interest rate (APR).
  2. Choose Fixed monthly payment and type what you pay each month to see how long payoff takes and the interest it costs.
  3. Or choose Pay off in N months and type a target number of months to see the monthly payment required.
  4. Results update live, with a year-by-year breakdown of interest, principal and remaining balance.

The monthly interest rate is your APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100. If a fixed payment is not larger than that first month’s interest charge, the balance never falls and the card cannot be paid off — the calculator will warn you.

Frequently asked questions

How does the credit card payoff calculator work?

It uses standard amortization math. Each month interest is added at the monthly rate (your APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100), your payment is subtracted, and the remaining balance carries to the next month. The calculator repeats this until the balance reaches zero, counting the months and summing the interest you pay along the way.

What does "payment too low to ever pay off" mean?

If your fixed monthly payment is less than or equal to the first month’s interest, the balance never shrinks — it stays the same or grows. When that happens the card can never be paid off at that payment, so you must pay more than the monthly interest charge for any progress to be made.

How is the required monthly payment calculated?

For a fixed number of months the calculator uses the amortization formula P = B × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where B is the balance, r is the monthly rate and n is the number of months. When the rate is zero it simply divides the balance by the number of months.

Is my financial data sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser — your balance, rate and payment are never uploaded to a server and nothing is stored. It is safe to use with real figures.

Does this account for fees or changing rates?

No. It assumes a fixed APR and no new charges, annual fees or late fees. Real statements may vary slightly because of daily interest accrual, promotional rates or added purchases, so treat the result as a close estimate.

How can I pay off my card faster?

Pay more than the minimum every month, avoid adding new purchases, and put any extra money toward the balance. Even a small increase in the monthly payment can cut months off the payoff time and save a large amount of interest, because less of each payment is lost to interest.
