How to use the readability checker

  1. Paste your text — an article, email, landing page or essay.
  2. Read the Reading Ease score (higher is easier) and the grade level it maps to.
  3. To raise the score, shorten sentences and swap long words for simpler ones, then watch it update live.

The scores use the well-known Flesch formulas, based on average sentence length and syllables per word. They are a strong guide for plain, inclusive writing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?

A 0–100 score where higher means easier to read. Roughly: 90–100 is very easy, 60–70 is plain English for most adults, and below 30 is very hard (academic or technical). It is based on average sentence length and average syllables per word.

What score should I aim for?

For a general audience, aim for about 60–70 (clear, plain English). Marketing and web copy often target 60+, while legal or scientific writing naturally scores lower. Shorter sentences and simpler words raise the score.

What is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level?

It converts the same measures into a US school grade. A grade of 8 means a typical 13–14-year-old could follow it. Lower grades mean wider, easier reach.

Is the syllable count exact?

It is a close estimate. Counting syllables perfectly needs a dictionary; this uses a reliable rule-based method that is accurate enough for readability scoring across normal text.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored, so you can check private drafts safely.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up.
