How to use the slug generator

Paste or type your title in the box above and the slug appears instantly below. Pick a hyphen for public web URLs (search engines read it as a word separator) or an underscore for file names and code. Keep Lowercase on for standard web addresses, or turn it off to preserve letter case.

Need many slugs? Paste a list with one title per line and you get one slug per line in the same order — ideal for converting a batch of headings, product names or article titles at once.

A good slug is short, descriptive and made only of lowercase letters, numbers and the separator. Accents and diacritics are stripped to their base letters, and anything else becomes a separator, so the result is always safe to drop straight into a URL.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the human-readable part of a URL that identifies a page — the bit after the last slash, like my-first-post in /blog/my-first-post. A good slug is lowercase, uses words separated by hyphens, and contains no spaces or special characters, which keeps URLs clean, shareable and easier for search engines to read.

How does this slug generator work?

As you type, the tool converts your text to lowercase, removes accents and diacritics, replaces every run of non-alphanumeric characters with your chosen separator, collapses repeated separators and trims any separator from the start and end. The result is a safe, tidy slug ready to drop into a URL.

Should I use a hyphen or an underscore?

For public web URLs, use a hyphen (-). Google treats hyphens as word separators, so blue-widgets is read as two words, while blue_widgets can be read as one. Underscores are fine for file names or code identifiers, so the choice is yours.

Can I generate many slugs at once?

Yes. The tool supports bulk mode automatically — paste multiple lines and it returns one slug per line, in the same order. This is handy for turning a list of titles or headings into slugs in a single step.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server and nothing is stored. It is safe to use with draft titles or private content.

Does it handle Unicode and accented letters?

Yes. Accented letters such as café or naïve are normalized to their base Latin form (cafe, naive). Characters from scripts with no Latin equivalent are treated as separators, so the slug stays within safe URL characters.
