What is a hash?
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data. The same input always produces the same hash, but you cannot reverse a hash back into the original text. Hashes are used to verify file integrity, index data and store password verifiers.
Which algorithms are shown?
This tool outputs MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512 and a CRC32 checksum for your input at once, so you can copy whichever your task needs.
Should I use MD5 or SHA-1 for security?
No. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security use (collisions are practical) — they are fine only as non-security checksums. For anything security-sensitive use SHA-256 or stronger, and for passwords use a dedicated algorithm like bcrypt/argon2, not a raw hash.
Is my text sent anywhere or stored?
It is sent to the server to compute the hash for that one request and nothing is stored in a database or log. Do not paste secrets you do not want to transmit.
Why is the same text giving the same hash?
That is by design — hashing is deterministic. Identical input always yields identical output, which is exactly what lets you verify that two pieces of data match.
