How a Cyprus IBAN is built
A Cyprus IBAN is always exactly 28 characters long. It opens with the ISO country code CY, followed by two check digits and a 24-character Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN). In SWIFT IBAN Registry notation the BBAN is 3n5n16c — that is 3 fields: 3 digits, 5 digits and 16 letters or digits. The BBAN carries the national bank identifier and the account number, so the same account keeps its domestic details inside the IBAN.
The BBAN is not purely numeric: it contains 16 alphanumeric positions, and 8 digit-only positions. Forms and databases that accept CY IBANs must allow upper-case letters after the check digits — stripping or rejecting them breaks valid numbers.
IBAN lengths range from 15 to 31 characters across the 62 countries we cover; at 28, Cyprus sits on the longer side. Other countries whose IBANs are also 28 characters long: Albania, Azerbaijan, Dominican Republic, Hungary, Lebanon, Poland. Length alone therefore cannot tell them apart — always compare the country code too.
The check digits (82 in the example) follow ISO 7064 MOD-97-10. Move the first four characters to the end — 123456789012345678901234CY82 — then replace each letter with two digits (A = 10 … Z = 35), giving 123456789012345678901234123482. Divided by 97 this leaves a remainder of 1; any correctly typed Cyprus IBAN gives 1, while a typo or two swapped characters almost always produce a different remainder.
On paper and in banking apps the IBAN is usually printed in groups of four (CY82 1234 5678 9012 3456 7890 1234); in payment files and APIs it is sent without spaces. Cyprus is part of SEPA, so euro payments to a CY IBAN can be sent as SEPA credit transfers or collected as SEPA direct debits.

How many characters is a Cyprus IBAN?
A Cyprus IBAN always has exactly 28 characters: the country code CY, two check digits and a 24-character Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN). Spaces are only added for readability and are not counted.
What is the structure of a Cyprus IBAN?
It is CYkk followed by the BBAN, where kk are the check digits. In SWIFT IBAN Registry notation the BBAN is 3n5n16c — 3 digits, 5 digits and 16 letters or digits. A format example is CY82 1234 5678 9012 3456 7890 1234.
Does a Cyprus IBAN contain letters?
Yes. Besides the country code CY, the BBAN (3n5n16c) has 16 positions that may hold letters or digits. Keep the letters when you copy or store the IBAN — only spaces may be removed.
How do I check that a Cyprus IBAN is valid?
Check that it starts with CY, has 28 characters, that the BBAN matches 3n5n16c, and that the ISO 7064 MOD-97 remainder equals 1. The checker on this page does all four in your browser; the IBAN Validator also handles bulk lists. A pass means the format is valid — not that the account exists.
Is Cyprus part of SEPA?
Yes. Cyprus is in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), so euro credit transfers and direct debits to a CY IBAN can be made under the SEPA schemes.
