IBAN Format by Country — Length, Structure & Examples

The IBAN length and BBAN structure for 62 countries, each with a checksum-valid format example and a free in-browser checker.

An IBAN always starts with a two-letter country code and two check digits, but what follows — the Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) — is defined by each country. That is why IBANs range from 15 characters (Norway) to 31 characters (Malta). Pick a country to see its exact structure, a broken-down example and a validator for that country.

Frequently asked questions

Are all IBANs the same length?

No. Every country fixes its own IBAN length, from 15 characters (Norway) to 31 characters (Malta). Within one country the length never varies, which makes the length a quick first check.

What do the first four characters of an IBAN mean?

Characters 1–2 are the ISO 3166 country code (for example DE or GB) and characters 3–4 are check digits computed with ISO 7064 MOD-97-10. Everything after that is the national BBAN, whose structure differs per country.

How are IBAN check digits verified?

Move the first four characters to the end, replace each letter with a number (A = 10 … Z = 35) and divide by 97. For a correctly typed IBAN the remainder is always 1.

Are the example IBANs real accounts?

No. Each example uses a filler BBAN in the right national format with correctly computed check digits. They show the format only and are not linked to any bank account.
