How a Kuwait IBAN is built
A Kuwait IBAN is always exactly 30 characters long. It opens with the ISO country code KW, followed by two check digits and a 26-character Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN). In SWIFT IBAN Registry notation the BBAN is 4a22c — that is 2 fields: 4 letters and 22 letters or digits. The BBAN carries the national bank identifier and the account number, so the same account keeps its domestic details inside the IBAN.
The BBAN is not purely numeric: it contains 4 letter positions and 22 alphanumeric positions, and 0 digit-only positions. Forms and databases that accept KW IBANs must allow upper-case letters after the check digits — stripping or rejecting them breaks valid numbers.
IBAN lengths range from 15 to 31 characters across the 62 countries we cover; at 30, Kuwait sits on the longer side. Other countries whose IBANs are also 30 characters long: Mauritius. Length alone therefore cannot tell them apart — always compare the country code too.
The check digits (54 in the example) follow ISO 7064 MOD-97-10. Move the first four characters to the end — ABCD1234567890123456789012KW54 — then replace each letter with two digits (A = 10 … Z = 35), giving 101112131234567890123456789012203254. Divided by 97 this leaves a remainder of 1; any correctly typed Kuwait IBAN gives 1, while a typo or two swapped characters almost always produce a different remainder.
On paper and in banking apps the IBAN is usually printed in groups of four (KW54 ABCD 1234 5678 9012 3456 7890 12); in payment files and APIs it is sent without spaces. Kuwait is outside SEPA, so international senders usually also need the bank's SWIFT/BIC code.

How many characters is a Kuwait IBAN?
A Kuwait IBAN always has exactly 30 characters: the country code KW, two check digits and a 26-character Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN). Spaces are only added for readability and are not counted.
What is the structure of a Kuwait IBAN?
It is KWkk followed by the BBAN, where kk are the check digits. In SWIFT IBAN Registry notation the BBAN is 4a22c — 4 letters and 22 letters or digits. A format example is KW54 ABCD 1234 5678 9012 3456 7890 12.
Does a Kuwait IBAN contain letters?
Yes. Besides the country code KW, the BBAN (4a22c) has 4 positions that are always letters and 22 positions that may hold letters or digits. Keep the letters when you copy or store the IBAN — only spaces may be removed.
How do I check that a Kuwait IBAN is valid?
Check that it starts with KW, has 30 characters, that the BBAN matches 4a22c, and that the ISO 7064 MOD-97 remainder equals 1. The checker on this page does all four in your browser; the IBAN Validator also handles bulk lists. A pass means the format is valid — not that the account exists.
Is Kuwait part of SEPA?
No. Kuwait is not in the Single Euro Payments Area. Its banks use the IBAN for incoming international transfers, which usually travel over SWIFT, so the sender often also needs the bank's SWIFT/BIC code.
