Frequently asked questions

What is Morse code?

Morse code is a method of encoding text as a series of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). Each letter, digit and common punctuation mark has its own unique pattern — for example E is . and T is -. It was created in the 1830s for telegraph communication and is still used today in radio and emergency signalling.

How are letters and words separated?

Inside a single character the dots and dashes have no gap. Between two letters there is one space, and between two words there is a forward slash / (shown here with spaces around it). So SOS becomes ... --- ... and HI YOU becomes .... .. / -.-- --- ..-.

Which characters are supported?

All 26 letters A–Z, the digits 0–9, and common punctuation: . , ? ' ! / ( ) & : ; = + - _ " $ @. Letters are case-insensitive. Any character without a Morse equivalent is skipped, or shown as # if you turn that option on.

Can I decode Morse code back to text?

Yes. Type or paste Morse into the Morse box using dots and dashes. Separate letters with spaces and words with a slash / (or several spaces). The text appears instantly in the Text box. You can also hear it: press Play to listen to the dots and dashes as beeps.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The translation runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server and nothing is stored. The audio playback is generated locally with the Web Audio API, so you can use the tool completely offline once the page has loaded.

What is the timing of the beeps?

The Play button uses standard Morse timing: a dash is three times as long as a dot, the gap between symbols in a letter equals one dot, the gap between letters equals three dots, and the gap between words equals seven dots. An optional visual flash blinks in time with the sound.
