How the typing test works

  1. Click the box and start typing the passage shown above — the timer starts on your first key.
  2. Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, so you can see exactly where you slipped.
  3. Finish the passage to lock in your WPM and accuracy, then press New text to try another.

WPM uses the standard 5-characters-per-word measure on your correct characters, so both speed and accuracy shape your score. Practise a little each day and watch your numbers climb.

Frequently asked questions

How is WPM (words per minute) calculated?

A "word" is standardised as 5 characters, so WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes typed. Using correct characters means mistakes lower your speed, which gives a fair, comparable number — this is how most typing tests measure WPM.

How is accuracy measured?

Accuracy is the share of characters you typed that match the passage: correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100. A clean run is 100%; each wrong key lowers it.

When does the timer start and stop?

The clock starts on your first keystroke, not when the page loads, and stops the moment you finish the passage — so sitting and reading first does not count against you.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is typical, 60–70 WPM is fast, and 90+ WPM is professional. Accuracy matters as much as raw speed — aim to stay above 95%.

Is my result saved or sent anywhere?

No. The whole test runs in your browser; nothing you type and no result is uploaded or stored on a server.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up. Press New text for a fresh passage and practise as much as you like.
