Average Calculator

Paste a list of numbers and instantly get the mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, standard deviation and variance. Everything runs in your browser — your data is never sent anywhere and nothing is stored.

How to use the average calculator

  1. Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces or new lines — you can mix them freely.
  2. Results update live as you type. Anything that is not a valid number is ignored.
  3. Read off the mean, median, mode and spread, then click Copy results to take them with you.

The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value, and the mode is the most frequent value (there may be several, or none). Range is max minus min, and the standard deviation and variance shown are the population measures (dividing by the count of values).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the average — add every number and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (the average of the two middle values if the count is even). The mode is the value that appears most often. Each describes a different kind of "typical" value.

How do I enter my numbers?

Paste or type your numbers into the box separated by commas, spaces or new lines — you can mix all three. Decimals and negative numbers are supported, and any text that is not a valid number is ignored automatically.

What does "no mode" or "multiple modes" mean?

If every number appears the same number of times there is no mode. If two or more values tie for the most appearances the set is multimodal and all of the tied values are shown as modes.

What is the range?

The range is the difference between the largest and the smallest value (max minus min). It is a quick measure of how spread out your numbers are.

Which standard deviation does this use?

This tool reports the population standard deviation and variance — it divides by n (the count of values), treating your numbers as the whole population rather than a sample.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server and nothing is stored. It is safe for data you would not want to transmit.
