How ROI is calculated

Return on investment compares your gain to your cost. The net profit is simply the final value minus the initial investment, and the total ROI expresses that gain as a percentage of what you put in. Because a 50% return over one year is far better than 50% over ten, the annualised ROI converts the total return into a per-year rate so you can compare investments fairly. Frequently asked questions

What is ROI?

ROI (Return on Investment) measures how much you gained or lost on an investment relative to its cost, as a percentage: ROI = (final value − initial investment) ÷ initial investment × 100. A positive ROI is a profit; a negative ROI is a loss.

What is annualised ROI?

Total ROI ignores how long you held the investment. Annualised ROI converts it to a per-year rate so you can compare investments of different lengths: ((final ÷ initial)^(1 ÷ years) − 1) × 100.

What counts as a good ROI?

It depends on the asset and risk. As a rough benchmark, the long-run stock market has returned roughly 7–10% per year. A higher ROI usually comes with higher risk, so always compare on an annualised basis and against a relevant benchmark.
