No-tax states flagged

The five states with no statewide sales tax are called out automatically.

Good to know: this uses the state base rate only. Real US sales tax is often state + county + city + district, so your final rate can be higher. For an exact amount, check the rate for the specific ZIP code. Not tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

Which US states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon (remember them as “NOMAD”). Note that Alaska and Montana still allow some local sales taxes in certain areas, even though the state rate is 0%.

Does this include county and city taxes?

No — this calculator uses the state base rate. Real US sales tax is often state + county + city + special district, which can add 1–5% or more on top. For an exact total you need the rate for the specific ZIP code. Use this for a quick state-level estimate.

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate: tax = price × rate, then total = price + tax. For example, $100 at a 7.25% rate is $7.25 tax and $107.25 total. Enter an amount and pick a state above to do it instantly.

What is the difference between sales tax and VAT?

Sales tax (US) is charged once, at the final sale to the consumer, and set by each state/locality. VAT (used in most other countries) is charged at every stage of the supply chain. This tool is for US sales tax only.

Are these rates always up to date?

State base rates change rarely, but they do change, and local rates change more often. Treat this as a close estimate and confirm the current rate with your state’s Department of Revenue before filing or charging customers.
